The Importance of Nutrition - Fuelling Your Best Life

Mar 26, 2025

When it comes to living your Best Life, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is nutrition. What you eat affects how you feel, think, and move every single day.  It’s not about strict diets, or cutting out everything you love – it’s about understanding the impact of food on your body and making small, manageable changes.  By nourishing yourself with the right foods, you’ll feel more energized, focused, and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.

Why Good Nutrition Matters

Good nutrition is the foundation of your health and wellbeing.  Eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods — think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats — gives your body the nutrients it needs to function at its best.

Everything you eat literally builds every cell in your body.  Your hair, your skin, your muscles, and bones – everything comes from what you are eating and drinking.  Are you eating lots of healthy fruit and vegetables?  Some seeds, and nuts, and healthy fats?  Perhaps with some healthy proteins, and legumes and/or grains?  Whole food items that will enable your body to building healthy cells, and process your nutrition for optimal benefit?

In addition to being the building blocks of your cells, nutrition also boosts your immune system, keeps your energy levels stable, helps you manage your weight, and supports a positive mood. Plus, good nutrition is one of the best ways to help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers (as well as moving your body, feeling and releasing your emotions, and keeping a positive mindset when possible).  Living a healthy life is a holistic journey, for sure, however nutrition does play a foundational role in it.

Choosing Whole Foods Over Processed Foods

One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your nutrition is by focusing on whole foods. Whole foods are minimally processed, and closer to their natural state, like fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.  Processed foods, on the other hand, are often packed with sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients that can leave you feeling sluggish, and can contribute to health problems.

When you choose whole foods, you’re giving your body the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants it needs to thrive.  For example, a simple snack like an apple, or a handful of almonds, will keep you feeling satisfied and energized, unlike sugary snacks that give you a quick high, followed by an energy crash.

Hydration and Healthy Habits

Don’t forget about hydration!  As we all know, water is essential for our health – our cells need it, we use it to regulate our temperate, and also to help remove waste products from our bodies.  According to Medical News Today, our bodies are approximately 60% water, although it varies between around 45-75%.  (More information on body composition and water can be found in the article, with the link at the end of the blog.)

Drinking enough water is essential for every function in your body.  Staying hydrated helps digestion, keeps your skin glowing, and maintains your energy throughout the day. And if you’re looking to reduce your intake of soft drinks or coffee, herbal teas are a fantastic alternative — they are usually packed with health benefits, and free from harmful additives — especially if you get the organic versions.

Incorporating small habits, like having a glass of water with each meal, or preparing a herbal tea, can go a long way in helping you maintain your nutrition even on the busiest days.  Healthline has written an article noting that drinking water with meals should be ok for digestion, however, as always, listen to your body, and adjust accordingly.  If it doesn’t feel right for your body, perhaps get into the habit of having a glass of water for morning and afternoon tea – you could even set an alarm to remind you.  (Link for the article is below.)

Natural Supplements

Another way to support your nutrition is by adding natural supplements.  These can be roots, leaves, berries, mushrooms, bark, etc, often in powder form, which can be added to smoothies or bliss balls, for example.

I take gelatinized maca most days, usually in a smoothie, a hot drink, or in a bliss ball.  Our blog From Fatigue to Vitality - How Maca Can Supercharge Your Day goes into what maca is, the benefits, and various ways it can be used. (There are some more suggestions in the FAQ section.)

There are so many natural supplements out there, many of which have been used for centuries.  Some of my favourites include medicinal mushrooms (eg. Reishi, Chaga, and Lion’s Mane), although there are so many which I love, including some great green powders.

Another of my favourites is olive leaf extract, known for its ability to support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and help maintain healthy blood pressure.  It’s a simple, natural way to give your body an extra boost, especially when life gets busy.  (Obviously if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication, please consult with your medical doctor prior to adding to your diet.)

Nourish Your Body, Empower Your Life

When you nourish your body with the right foods, and give yourself the tools to stay healthy, you’re setting yourself up for success in every area of your life.  Feeling strong, energized, and clear-headed, makes it easier to be present with your family, excel at work, and enjoy your favorite activities.  And the best part?  You don’t have to overhaul your entire routine — start with one small change, and build from there.
