Love Yourself This Valentine’s Day — Because You Deserve It!

Valentine’s Day is often seen as a day for couples, filled with flowers, chocolates, and romantic gestures. But what if this year, instead of waiting for love from someone else, you focused on the most important relationship of all — the one with yourself?
No matter what your relationship status is, you are always with you. So, do you love yourself like you would love a partner? If not, why not? Loving yourself isn’t selfish or arrogant — it’s essential. And when you truly embrace self-love, everything in your life starts to feel lighter, more joyful, and more fulfilling. You feel so much better!
What Is Self-Love? (And What It’s Not)
Self-love means treating yourself with kindness, respect, and compassion. It’s about knowing your worth, setting boundaries, and taking care of your body, mind, and soul. It’s not about being perfect (after all, nobody is perfect!) — it’s about accepting yourself as you are, while also growing into the best version of yourself. And at the end of the day, isn’t that a worthwhile endeavour? To love yourself, be happy with yourself, and be your Best Self? Can you imagine how that feels?
It’s important to establish what self-love is not, so it doesn’t confuse you as to whether or not it is worth doing. (Spoiler alert — it’s definitely worth doing! 😊)
- Arrogance — Loving yourself doesn’t mean thinking you’re better than others. It means knowing that you are enough just as you are. (Knowing you are enough can be a game changer!)
- Selfishness — Taking care of yourself allows you to show up fully for others. If you feel looked after, (even if it's you looking after yourself), it gives you the space and energy to look after others. You can’t pour from an empty cup!
- Ignoring Growth — Self-love isn’t about staying the same forever. It’s about embracing who you are, while still striving to learn and evolve. (Being our Best Self means being open to learning, reflecting on yourself and your life, and gaining wisdom as you grow.)
The Benefits of Loving Yourself
When you truly love yourself, everything in your life improves.
- You attract healthier relationships. When you respect and value yourself, you naturally set boundaries, and choose people who treat you well. (Boundaries are so important – I have a blog on setting boundaries in a kind and gentle manner.)
- You feel more confident. Self-love helps you believe in yourself, and go after what you want without fear. (It can provide a more solid grounding, so people don't influence you as much.)
- You reduce stress and anxiety. When you stop being so hard on yourself, you create space for peace and joy. (And who doesn't want to replace stress and anxiety with more peace and joy?!)
- You take better care of yourself. You listen to your body, honor your emotions, and do things that make you feel good — whether it’s a long bath, a nourishing meal, or quiet time alone.
- You enjoy life more. When you love yourself, you don’t need to chase happiness — you are happiness (or you can find happiness more easily – for example, in a walk in nature, or chatting with a friend).
How to Love Yourself More This Valentine’s Day
If you’re not sure where to start, you can try these simple acts of self-love to get started.
💖 Spend some time alone, getting to know you.
💖 Treat yourself to something special — your favorite meal, a relaxing spa day, or a cozy night in with a good book.
💖 Say kind things to yourself. Replace negative self-talk with affirmations like, I am worthy. I am enough. I deserve love.
💖 Set boundaries, and say no to things that drain you. (My blog can help here.)
💖 Do something that brings you joy, just for you. (Really focus on what brings you joy.)
Remember, you don’t need a partner to celebrate love today. You already have you. And that’s more than enough.
