Embracing Change - How Adaptability Fuels Personal Growth
Dec 08, 2024Embracing Change - How Adaptability Fuels Personal Growth
Life throws curveballs — some big, some small. Sometimes, it’s as simple as needing to change your walking path to avoid swooping magpies, or finding a shady spot on a sunny day. These moments of adapting might seem minor, but they teach us an important life skill — adaptability.
Adapting to change isn’t just about convenience — it’s a way to grow, discover new opportunities, and live your Best Life. Why does adaptability matter? And are there any benefits to adaptability, to help us in the longer term? And what is neuroplasticity?
What is Adaptability?
Adaptability is your ability to adjust when things don’t go as planned. Whether it’s taking a different route to work, switching up your routine, or embracing bigger life changes, being flexible helps you navigate challenges with ease.
When you’re adaptable, you don’t get stuck in frustration or fear. Instead, you’re open to new ideas, experiences, and ways of doing things. It’s like saying, “Okay, let’s see where this road takes me.”
Whenever I find myself somewhere new (especially before SatNav!) I always said I was going on an adventure. I still do this now, especially if I’m driving somewhere. Sometimes others may complain that we’re ‘off-track’ — but I always look on it as an adventure. Wow, look at that house! What a beautiful tree/ocean/bird! Such a beautiful quiet area to live! Did you know this playground was here?!
How Does Adaptability Help You Live Your Best Life?
1. Reduces Stress
Change can be stressful, but adaptability helps you stay calm and centered. You’re less likely to feel overwhelmed, because you know you can adjust as needed.
2. Boosts Creativity
When you adapt, you often have to think outside the box. Maybe your new walking route takes you through a park you didn’t know existed. Suddenly, you’ve added beauty and variety to your day!
3. Opens Doors to Growth
Adaptability helps you embrace life’s surprises, big or small. Each change can lead to a new lesson, a deeper understanding of yourself, or an unexpected joy.
4. Keeps You Resilient
Life is unpredictable. Being adaptable means you can bounce back from challenges, and keep moving forward, no matter what happens.
Neuroplasticity - How Your Brain Adapts
Did you know that your brain is built to help you adapt? It’s all thanks to neuroplasticity, which is your brain’s ability to rewire itself, and create new connections. This amazing process happens throughout your life, not just when you’re a child.
When you try something new, or adjust to a change, your brain gets to work. It forms new neural pathways — like highways in your brain — that make it easier to adapt the next time you come across a similar situation. Some simple examples are outlined below.
- Switching your walking path — At first, your brain pays close attention to landmarks and directions. Over time, it memorizes the new route, and it becomes second nature.
- Adapting a recipe — If you change the ingredients of a recipe, thinking of various substitutes, and how they will work together, that could also be a form of neuroplasticity. I’m gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free, and regularly change recipes. Sometimes the adaptions are fantastic, others time not as successful. But I’m always trying new things, and seeing how to they work.
- Exploring a new hobby or skill — Whether it’s learning to play an instrument, or trying a new martial art, your brain strengthens connections between neurons as you practice, helping you improve and grow. Some of the moves in martial arts may be completely different to what you’re used to doing. (I was completely out of my comfort zone when I started Karate, and it took me a while to get my head (and body) around some of the moves.) Over time, they become more familiar, until eventually they become second nature.
Neuroplasticity is like your brain’s personal fitness trainer. The more you challenge it with change, the stronger and more flexible it becomes. It also helps you recover from setbacks, like learning to cope after a loss or injury.
Neuroplasticity isn’t just about adapting to changes you choose — it’s also how your brain helps you bounce back when life throws something unexpected your way. For example, if you’ve ever learned to adapt after losing a job, or ending a relationship, that’s neuroplasticity at work — helping you find new ways to move forward.
The process isn’t instant, though. Just like building muscles at the gym, creating and strengthening neural pathways takes time and practice. But every small effort counts. Even activities like solving puzzles, meditating, or reading about new topics help keep your brain sharp, and ready to adapt.
The best part? Neuroplasticity empowers you to reshape your life, no matter your age. Your brain is constantly growing and evolving, which means you can always learn, adapt, and improve.
So, when life calls for a detour — like a new walking path — remember that your brain is on your side, ready to guide you through uncharted territory, and help you thrive.
How to Cultivate Adaptability
Want to strengthen your adaptability muscles? Four tips to help are outlined below.
1. Embrace Small Changes
Start with little shifts in your routine, like taking a different way home, or trying a new recipe. Small changes build confidence for bigger ones.
2. Stay Curious
Approach life with a sense of wonder. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” or “What new opportunities might this bring?”
3. Practice Gratitude
Instead of focusing on what you’ve lost or changed, focus on what you’ve gained. For example, you might miss your usual walking path, but your new route could offer new sights and adventures.
4. Be Patient
Adapting takes time. Give yourself grace as you adjust, and celebrate your wins — no matter how small they seem.
A Couple Of My Adaptability Stories
Recently I had to adapt my walking path — magpies were swooping me multiple times, and there was no shade from the hot midday sun. At first I was frustrated, as I like that route, and it’s familiar. But then I realized this was an opportunity. I started exploring the area, finding shady paths, and even discovering a tree with a ‘hidden’ message, as shown in the photo above. (I’m not sure what the message is yet, but I’m having lots of fun thinking about it! Evil eye? Heart charger like in the Iron Man suits (with arms up)? Hidden doorway for the tree fairies? Portal for an alternate Universe?) 🤷🤣🤣
This small shift reminded me of the power of adaptability. By letting go of the ‘old' way, and embracing change, I found another walking path, with a different ‘vibe’, and learnt more about my neighbourhood (as well as my magical tree, of course)! 😊
Adaptability was also required when I started Karate (many years ago now). At first, I was a typical young lady – and when my Sensei asked me prepare to poke someone’s eyes out, I recoiled, and didn’t want to do it – even though it was only pretend. I just couldn’t bring myself to even pretend to do it! It was such a foreign and alien concept to me! However, it became clear that it was part of self-defense, and I needed to learn how to do it. In the end (over a long period of time) I overcome it, as in a self-defense situation, it was me or them. However, I found it interesting how long and how much I resisted it (due to the whole ‘lady’ concept in our culture, I think). It took a bit of a mindset change, but eventually I adapted, and am confident I could now do it if required. 🙃💪
Final Thoughts
Adaptability isn’t just a skill — it can be a superpower that helps you thrive in any situation. Adapting to new circumstances allows you to be open to making new friends, and seeing new opportunities as well. Life will always have its ups and downs, but by staying flexible, and tapping into your brain’s amazing neuroplasticity, you can turn challenges into opportunities.
So, next time life nudges you to change your path, take it as a chance to grow and explore. Who knows? You might just find something wonderful along the way.
