Aloe Vera for Skin, Hair, and Health: Nature’s Secret Weapon

Jan 29, 2025

Aloe vera is a plant that’s been used for thousands of years, and it’s not hard to see why.  Whether it’s soothing sunburns, hydrating your skin, or helping with digestion, aloe vera is like a natural multitasker.  This blog will explore the amazing benefits, some things to be aware of, and how to use aloe vera to support your health and well-being.

Benefits of Aloe Vera

1. Soothes Sunburns and Skin Irritations

Aloe vera gel is famous for its ability to soothe and cool the skin after too much sun.  Its moisturizing properties help reduce the sting of sunburns, and speed up healing. I've been using it for sunburn years, and prefer this to other creams and moisturizers - although it can be a tiny bit sticky on occasion, depending how thick you layer it, and how long you wait for it to dry.

Aloe also has anti-inflammatory effects, making it perfect for calming skin irritations like minor burns, rashes, or insect bites.  (I've used it on insect bites as well, but not as often, as I forget about it.  I tend to swell up with insect bites (and often scar as well), so need to put something on them, as soon as possible.  I tend to get bitten overseas a lot, and end up buying creams from chemists everywhere I go.  🙄)

2. Promotes Skin Hydration
Aloe vera is full of water, making it a great moisturizer for your skin.  It’s light and non-greasy, so it’s perfect for people with oily or sensitive skin. Applying aloe vera can leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed without clogging pores.  I've used it when I don't have other moisturizers available.

3. Supports Digestion
Aloe vera isn’t just for the outside of your body — it can help your inside too! Drinking aloe vera juice in moderation may aid in digestion, by helping to soothe and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. Some people use it to relieve heartburn, constipation, and bloating.  I've had aloe vera juice for years, and put it in my smoothies regularly.

4. Has Anti-Aging Properties
Aloe vera is packed with antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, which can help fight free radicals (the harmful molecules that contribute to aging).  By applying aloe to your skin, it may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, keeping your skin looking youthful and vibrant.  You may be aware that many moisturizers have aloe vera as one of the ingredients.

5. Boosts Immunity
Aloe vera contains compounds that can help support your immune system. It’s known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, making it a helpful addition to your natural health routine, especially when you’re feeling under the weather.

6. Supports Oral Health
Aloe vera can be a great addition to your dental care routine. Aloe vera juice is sometimes used as a mouthwash because of its ability to kill harmful bacteria and reduce plaque. It’s even been shown to help with gum disease and tooth decay.  (Please see the links below for more on this.)

Things to Keep in Mind

While aloe vera is generally safe for most people, there are a few things to be cautious about when considering adding it to your wellness routine.

1. Skin Sensitivity
Some people may have an allergic reaction to aloe vera, especially when using it topically. It’s a good idea to do a patch test (applying a small amount to your inner arm) before using it on your face, or larger areas of your body.

(I am so grateful that I am not allergic to aloe vera, as it is definitely in my tool box for wonderful things to use!)

2. Laxative Effect
Aloe vera latex, the yellowish substance found under the skin of the leaves, can have a strong laxative effect, and may cause diarrhea or stomach cramps if consumed in large amounts. If you’re using aloe vera juice for digestion, make sure it’s been properly processed, and that you’re drinking a safe amount.

(It may also depend on your own digestive system, as some people have systems that are very well-tuned and finely aligned, while others need a bit more help to get going! 😉)

3. Not Recommended for Pregnant Women
Aloe vera latex should be avoided by pregnant or breastfeeding women due to its laxative effects. Always consult with a healthcare provider before using aloe vera internally if you're pregnant or nursing.

How to Use Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is incredibly versatile. There are a number of ways to benefit from this amazing plant.  A few suggestions are mentioned below.

1. As a Skin Gel
Simply slice open an aloe vera leaf, and scoop out the gel.  Apply the gel directly to your skin after sun exposure, or when you need a hydrating boost.

This could also be good if you're reacting to other creams, or have extra-sensitive skin for some reason, and need something soothing on your skin (assuming you know you're not allergic to it).  I know I and a number of other friends/family members are allergic to various lotions and potions, however, I personally am unaware of anyone allergic to aloe vera - although please test yourself first, just to make sure.  You don't want to rub it all over your face, and then discover you're allergic to it!

2. Aloe Vera Juice
Drinking aloe vera juice can help soothe your digestive system. Make sure you choose a product that’s meant for consumption (look for one that’s free of aloe vera latex). Start with small amounts (like 1–2 tablespoons a day) to see how your body reacts.

I often put aloe vera juice in my smoothies - it adds a little bit more 'goodness' to it!  😊

3. In Homemade Face Masks
Combine aloe vera gel with honey or yogurt to make a hydrating face mask. Leave it on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse off for smooth, moisturized skin.  (Test all ingredients on your skin (wrist/inner arm) first to ensure you are not allergic to them.)

4. As a Hair Treatment
Aloe vera can help nourish your hair and scalp. After checking you are not allergic to it, you could apply aloe vera gel directly to your scalp, and massage it in for a few minutes. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing your hair for shiny, healthy locks.

Another option is to mix it with other ingredients to create a hair mask, as mentioned in one of the Medical Health Today articles below (I've noted this next to the link for easy reference), which has more on aloe vera for hair health.

5. Aloe Vera Ice Cubes
For an extra refreshing treat, freeze aloe vera gel into ice cubes, and rub them over your skin for a cooling sensation, especially in hot weather, or after a workout.

Growing Aloe Vera at Home

Growing your own aloe vera at home can be a rewarding and easy way to keep this healing plant right at your fingertips. Aloe vera is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that thrives in dry, sunny climates.  We’ve outlined some tips on how to grow it, so you can grow your own, and use it whenever you need to!

1. Choose the Right Location

Aloe vera loves sunlight! Place your plant in a bright spot where it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. A sunny windowsill or balcony is ideal. It’s best to avoid areas with too much humidity, as aloe vera prefers dry conditions.  (I was able to grow it in Victoria, Australia, and it seemed quite happy - and had lots of babies!  😊)

2. Use Well-Draining Soil

Aloe vera doesn’t like to sit in water, so use well-draining soil. Cactus or succulent potting mix works perfectly. You can even make your own mix by combining regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

3. Watering Tips

Aloe vera is drought-tolerant, so it doesn’t need frequent watering. Water it deeply but infrequently — typically once every 2-3 weeks. Always allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Over-watering can lead to root rot, so it’s important to avoid soggy soil.  (You could even set a reminder in your cell phone every 2-3 weeks to check the water - easy peasy!)

4. Container and Potting

If you're growing aloe in a container, make sure it has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom. Aloe vera grows well in pots because it doesn’t need a lot of space for its roots. (Yay!)

5. Temperature and Care

Aloe vera prefers warm temperatures (60-85°F / 16-29°C) and can tolerate some heat. If you live in a cooler climate, you can bring your aloe plant indoors during the colder months. Aloe is also quite low-maintenance, only needing occasional pruning of older leaves.

6. Harvesting Aloe Vera

To use aloe vera gel, simply cut off a mature leaf (the outer leaves are best) and slice it open. Scoop out the gel with a spoon. You can store the gel in the fridge for a few days, but fresh gel is always best.

In Conclusion

Aloe vera is more than just a green plant - it’s a powerhouse of benefits for both your skin and health. From soothing sunburns to supporting digestion, aloe vera is a must-have in your wellness toolkit. Just remember to be mindful of its potential side effects, especially when using it internally. Always start with small amounts, and if you have any concerns, talk to your healthcare provider.

Whether you’re looking for natural skincare, digestive relief, or a healthy addition to your daily routine, aloe vera can help you live your best life with its gentle, healing touch!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Aloe Vera

Q - Can I use aloe vera on my face every day?

A - Yes, you can! Aloe vera is gentle enough for daily use, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. It can be used as a moisturizer or soothing mask. Just be sure to do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin to avoid any allergic reactions.

Q - How do I know if I’m allergic to aloe vera?

A - To check for an allergic reaction, apply a small amount of aloe vera gel to the inside of your wrist or elbow. Wait for 24 hours. If you experience redness, swelling, or itching, you may be allergic, and should avoid using it.

Q - Can aloe vera help with acne?

A - Yes, aloe vera can be helpful for acne-prone skin. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties can reduce redness and swelling, and help heal acne breakouts. Apply a thin layer of aloe vera gel to the affected area, and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing.

Q - Is aloe vera safe to drink?

Q - Can I use aloe vera for sunburns?

A - Aloe vera is a fantastic natural remedy for sunburns. It soothes the skin, reduces inflammation, and promotes healing. Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to the sunburned area and reapply as needed.  (Alternatively, you can use bought aloe vera, which is often 99% pure, and easier to take with you when travelling! 😊)

Q - Does aloe vera help with hair growth?

A - Aloe vera may help promote hair growth by improving circulation to the scalp, and reducing dandruff. It can also moisturize the scalp, and strengthen hair follicles. To use, massage aloe vera gel directly onto the scalp, and leave it on for 20-30 minutes before washing it out.  (You could also try some of the hair mask suggestions found in one of the links below, which I've marked for easy reference.)
