Starting your own business, whether full-time or as a side hustle, can be one of the most exciting and rewarding things you do. It’s a chance to create something meaningful, follow your passions, and even make a living doing what you love. But let’s face it — getting started can feel overwhelming.
Why Start Your Own Business?
Starting your own business is an exciting way to:
- Follow your passion.
- Have more control over your time.
- Make a difference in the world.
- Create financial freedom.
Whether your goal is to work from home, turn a hobby into income, or build something big, taking the leap into entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding.
If this is your goal for the year, here are some tips, tools, and insights (including a few of my personal favorites) to help you hit the ground running.
1. Clarify Your Vision
Before diving in, take some time to think about what kind of business you want to create. The clearer you are about your vision, the easier it will be to follow through when the going gets tough.
- What are you passionate about? What aspects are the most important to you?
- Who do you want to help?
- What kind of impact do you want to make?
Write these ideas down. The clearer your vision, the easier it will be to take action.
2. Find the Right Tools
When I started my business, I tried a lot of different software packages. Some I loved, others I found didn’t work as well for me. I am now working with a number of software packages, some of which are helping me become more productive. 🛠️
I also did a bit of research on what others found helpful, so I was learning from others who have gone before me. I found this research really helpful – some I followed initially, some I followed after making mistakes.
These are some of my main trusted software packages that I use on a regular basis, and which can help you, too.
It’s important to find the tools that work for you – otherwise you will get frustrated, and waste a lot of time, and potentially money.
🖼️ Add Canva to Your Toolbox for Visuals 🖼️
When it comes to creating stunning visuals for your business, Canva is an absolute lifesaver. Whether you need to create social media posts, website graphics, flyers, or business cards, Canva makes it easy — even if you’re not a designer. With its user-friendly interface, and thousands of templates, you can create professional-looking designs in minutes. Plus, it’s free to get started.
I used the free version for a number of months, before upgrading to the Pro version, which unlocks even more feature. Most people I know in business use Canva, as it’s powerful, easy, yet affordable (or free!). Canva can be found here.
📱 SmarterQueue for Social Media Management 📱
Social media can be a huge time drain, but it’s also an important part of marketing your business. SmarterQueue helps you schedule and automate your posts so you can post consistently without spending hours online. It allows you to plan your content in advance and set it on autopilot, so you can spend more time building your business and less time glued to your phone.
It’s so easy to use, which I love, and helps you create great posts from the free images available. I also love the ‘choose your own’ categories, which allow you to post varied content, and spread it out, easily. I find the queue section helpful to see exactly what I’ve got planned, as well, so I can check that it’s cohesive. There is also a repurpose content section, which could save even more time. 🈺 All-In-One Kajabi Software 🈺
Kajabi is a powerful, all-in-one platform that’s perfect for creating and running your business. It allows you to build a website, create courses, manage your email list, and more – all in one place. Most of the mentors that I listen to (multi-millionaires) use this software, which says a lot - and it can grow with you.
The first website package that I bought changed hands after I bought it, and the offering changed quite a bit as a result. It was also a small one-man-band when I bought it, having been bought out just before I got it as well. So while there were a number of issues (eg broken links, access issues, etc) it was potentially a timing issue, as well. It also required that I link to other software packages to do what I wanted it to do. So yes, while it was initially less expensive, by the time I’d added up all the ‘extras’ with other software to get it to work, plus all the time learning how to connect each of the other software packages I needed, and then learning each software package – as well the issue that if anything broke, working out who to call, and how to fix it - I decided it wasn’t worth it. I looked at Squarespace for a website, however I didn’t like the templates, and it seemed to be quite rigid in what you could and couldn’t do.
I decided I wanted an all-in-one tool, so if something was broken, there was one port of call to fix it. It was also one software package to learn, and it could grow with me. Based on everything that I’d heard, it is a very popular software program, and used by lots of multi-millionaire business owners. I compared it with a few other all-in-one programs, but decided on this one.
While Kajabi isn’t the simplest tool to use – there is a learning curve – there is also a lot of information out there on how to do anything, which is very helpful. I just google what I want to do, and then follow the instructions. I’m familiar with it now, so know how to do most things. If I want to do something else, I just look it up. I’ve found it to be very robust, and the help desk (when I got stuck) is incredibly helpful. What I love most is that it eliminates the need to juggle multiple software packages, and has lots of options to help you grow your business. 3. Start Small and Focused
You don’t need to have it all figured out to get started. Begin with one clear idea or product and build from there. Trying to do everything at once can lead to overwhelm. For example, you could start by creating a website, then by creating your first product. One thing at a time is usually helpful. Remember, progress beats perfection!
4. Create a Simple Plan
You don’t need a 50-page business plan to get started. A simple outline will do, as long as you have some basics written down. ✍️
- What’s your first product or service?
- Who are your ideal customers?
- How will you reach them?
Set small, achievable goals to build momentum.

5. Don’t Overthink Your First Step
It’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis. Instead of trying to plan every detail, take one small action today. Whether it’s setting up a website, or brainstorming your first product, action builds momentum. You can always adjust it later if required – however you need to get started to move forward! 😉
6. Build Your Support Network
Connect with other entrepreneurs for advice, support, and encouragement. Online communities, local meetups, or Academies like Leonie Dawson’s can help you find your tribe. You might also have some supportive people around you already. I’ve got some great supportive friends and family members who are not in business, as well as some who are.
7. Create a Schedule
If you’re starting a side hustle, carve out specific times each week to work on your business. Treat these hours as sacred. If a set schedule doesn’t work for you, ensure you dedicate enough time per week – eg. 5 hours a week. You might be able to manage 2 evenings a week, plus some time on the weekend. Even just a few focused hours can make a big difference over time. Remember, if it’s important to you, you need to spend time on it, especially to get it started. ⏰
8. Start Small and Test
You don’t need to quit your job, or invest a fortune to start your business. Begin with a side hustle, test your ideas, and grow from there.
9. Keep Learning/Invest in Yourself
You are your business’s biggest asset. Take time to learn, grow, and take care of your health and mindset. Remember there will be mistakes, and lessons learned. A positive mindset is important.
